Electrical Fault Finding in Cape Town
A tripping breaker, dead room or intermittent outage is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Useful electrical fault finding records the pattern, separates the supply from the property installation, divides circuits and tests likely causes before repair work is proposed.
Which fault pattern best matches your property?
These routes help separate urgent danger from a diagnostic appointment.
Earth leakage or a breaker will not stay on
Divide appliances and fixed circuits to find the section causing the protective device to operate.
Trace repeated tripping Partial outageOne room or circuit is dead
Check the relevant protective device, circuit connections and affected points.
Investigate the dead circuit Whole propertyOnly your property has no power
Rule out the network, prepaid meter and supply boundary before opening internal circuits.
Separate supply from faultFaults that need testing rather than guesswork
The same symptom can come from moisture, heat, loose connections, damaged wiring, appliances or protection equipment.
Rain related tripping
Wet outdoor equipment, cable entries and damaged insulation can change as they dry.
Main board problems
Heat, buzzing, burning smells or damage need urgent caution.
Ongoing electrical problems
Use timing, previous repairs and load history to find a repeat cause.
Geyser and fixed-load trips
Separate the fixed circuit, controls and equipment from unrelated home wiring.
How a broad symptom becomes a specific repair
Fault finding works by narrowing the installation while preserving what the evidence shows.
-
Build the timeline
Timing, rooms, loads, weather, recent work and reset attempts establish the test order.
-
Confirm the supply boundary
Neighbourhood supply, metering and property-side equipment are separated.
-
Divide and test circuits
Affected sections and connected equipment are isolated methodically.
-
Repair the evidenced cause
The finding determines the repair, followed by a check of the affected circuit.
Stop if the fault presents an immediate danger
Smoke, sparks, shocks, exposed live parts, fire damage, water around electrical equipment or a hot and buzzing board should be treated as urgent. Keep people clear and isolate only from a dry, undamaged position if it is safe to do so.
- No repeated resetting
- No touching wet equipment
- No opening electrical enclosures
- Urgent attendance subject to availability

Questions people ask before booking
Why does my earth leakage trip even when nothing obvious is on?
Some fixed loads remain connected, and insulation or moisture faults do not always depend on an appliance being visibly in use. Circuits and connected equipment need to be separated and tested.
Can one appliance switch off the whole property?
Yes. Where several circuits share earth-leakage protection, one faulty appliance or circuit can operate the device and interrupt all circuits downstream of it.
Why does the fault disappear before the electrician arrives?
Moisture, temperature, movement and changing loads can make faults intermittent. Notes about timing, weather, affected rooms and equipment are still valuable.
Is every whole-property outage an electrical fault inside the property?
No. Network supply, local metering, a main protective device or an internal installation fault can produce similar symptoms. The boundary must be checked.
