Electrical Compliance Certificates in Cape Town
An electrical Certificate of Compliance is issued only after the installation has been inspected and tested and found compliant for the applicable scope. If defects are found, they must be explained, corrected and retested before certification, not hidden inside a vague promise of a “quick CoC”.

A CoC relates to the fixed electrical installation and is accompanied by the prescribed test report. It is not a blanket warranty on every appliance in the property.

Questions people ask before booking
Is an electrical CoC valid for only two years?
Not as a general expiry rule. The Electrical Installation Regulations specifically prevent a change of ownership where the certificate is older than two years. Additions, alterations or identified defects can create other certification requirements.
Does an inspection guarantee that a certificate will be issued?
No. The installation must satisfy the applicable requirements for the assessed scope. Defects may need remedial work and retesting before the registered person can issue the CoC.
Does the electrical CoC cover portable appliances?
The prescribed electrical CoC and test report concern the electrical installation. A portable-appliance assessment is a different scope unless specifically requested.
What should I provide before a property-transfer inspection?
Provide the existing CoC and test report if available, details of alterations, access to all relevant areas, and information about solar, inverter, generator, pool, outbuilding or tenant installations.
Can the same contractor quote for defects found during inspection?
Yes, but the inspection finding and remedial quotation should remain understandable as separate stages. Certification follows only after accepted corrections are completed and retested.
