When you may need coc/certificate of compliance

Symptoms and situations worth having checked

Work completed since the last certificate?

Added or altered fixed wiring may need to form part of the assessment.

Unsure what failed?

A useful defect report identifies the item, concern and proposed correction.

Preparing for a property transfer?

Check the age and scope of existing electrical documents early.

What the work can include

  • Retest corrected items
  • Inspect accessible fixed wiring
  • Test protection, earthing and bonding
  • Record defects against applicable requirements
  • Separate inspection from remedial work

How the service is handled

A clear path from assessment to completion

  1. Document defects

    Required corrections are described clearly.

  2. Retest affected work

    Corrected items are checked again.

  3. Review records

Existing documents and alterations define the scope.

  4. Inspect and test

Visual checks and electrical tests assess the installation.

COC/Certificate Of Compliance FAQs

What if wiring changed later?

An addition or alteration generally needs documentation for at least the affected work.

Does inspection guarantee a certificate?

No. Defects may need correction and retesting by an appropriately authorised person.

What does a CoC cover?

It relates to the fixed installation and its test report, not every portable appliance.

How does the two-year rule affect a sale?

Regulations restrict a change of ownership where the certificate is older than two years.
